The Michigan Difference

Within seconds of the final buzzer, we ran as fast as our legs could carry us. Just like that, I was shoulder to shoulder in what felt like an endless sea of maize and blue flooding the streets of Ann Arbor. This was exactly how I had always imagined life at a big university: a huge team win followed by a celebration that united all students. My cheeks ached from smiling, and I was happy to be swept up in the roaring crowd to celebrate our win.
Although Michigan is known for its powerhouse athletics, not everyone arrives as a die-hard Wolverines fan, including me. Before this basketball season, I never cared much about whether we won or lost, as it didn’t affect me. However, I just didn’t understand how transformative it could feel to be part of a national championship run. I never pictured myself checking scores or gathering around a screen for a better view. And yet, sometime between the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight, I caught the social contagion of excitement that happened every time Yaxel made a basket. Without realizing it, I became part of the “cult” – a word used to describe Michigan fans who are emotionally invested in the success of the team.
In a hyper-digital world where so much of our time is spent behind screens, genuine shared moments feel rare. Even when we’re spending time together in person, half of it is individual experience on our phones. It’s uncommon to find an experience where everyone, regardless of background or interests, is truly on the same page. This all disappeared the night we won the national championship… the usual divisions that separated majors and backgrounds into groups dissolved, creating a completely unified celebration. Students poured in from every direction, and I didn’t mind being pushed or shoved. Because of the size of our university, most students are strangers. Still, I felt united with everyone regardless.
Moments like this remind me that the Michigan Difference isn’t just about academics or prestige. For me, it was special that a university of this size was still able to create a sense of unity that felt intimate. Michigan does what no other school can do – bringing thousands of individual lives into one shared experience, bonding everyone. This school can create a sense of belonging that is both expansive and personal. So, though we have thousands of separate college experiences, we all root for the same team and celebrate the same wins.
