Tiktok Tarot Readings Are Right About You

It’s late at night, my eyes are drying up in the glow of a deep escapism that is a TikTok doomscroll. Tomorrow, I’ll wake up to the same worries over money, love, school, and happiness. I wonder when things will start working out.
Suddenly, a video pops up: a tarot card reader sits on a bohemian rug from Pottery Barn, surrounded by slightly droopy houseplants, with a self-promo Instagram handle tagged in the upper right corner. I can’t look away, imagining that the tarot was truly meant to find me. Glittering words of salvation spell out fate’s promises on the screen: “The world is ready to see you on a larger and more expansive scale.” I don’t believe in the divinity of the TikTok algorithm, but I find myself momentarily considering that my For You page tarot reader was intentionally sent just for me. Am I entering an abundant season of growth? Is this the start of a new beginning, better than I could imagine? Judging by the thousands of likes these videos acquire, I’m not the only one wondering.
As a practical person who is not typically deceived by internet spirituality schemes, I catch myself questioning my guilty indulgence in these tarot readings. There is something uniquely mesmerizing about receiving a message that feels sent from a higher power. But when I set aside my desire to find certainty and reassurance, it becomes apparent that these tarot readings could not be any more vague. They could be meant for anybody. The more fascinating and dreamy the reading, the better. With just the right amount of ambiguity and confidence, a TikTok tarot reader can resonate with hundreds of thousands of people.
So, no one has figured it out. There’s a tremendous amount of comfort in this universality. Our problems, though they may feel insurmountable, aren’t too different from the next person’s. We’re all grappling with the same doubts and shouldering the same anxieties. This is a natural consequence of the human condition—heartbreak, difficulty, insecurity, the list goes on. We all search for reassurance about the future while worrying that who we are in the present isn’t enough.
If it takes a tarot reader wielding a deck of Etsy cards to soothe the fears of thousands of viewers, maybe we’ve fallen out of touch. What would happen if we looked up from our doomscrolls to find those around us experiencing the same highs and lows of life? We may find that the answers to our questions lie less in an algorithm and more in connection. Instead of scouring our feeds for positivity, we may need to begrudgingly accept that life’s trajectory isn’t linear. We can’t feel all of the positive emotions all of the time. We can, however, breathe a sigh of relief in knowing that when negativity takes over, someone out there shares our feelings. In a complex way, TikTok tarot readings are right about us—eventually, everything will work out as long as we’re ready to believe it.
Tonight, I think it’s finally time to put the phone down and start talking.
