My Perfect Day of Sounds

Someone recently asked me what my ideal day looks like.  If I had total authority, no responsibilities, and no commitments, how would I fill 24 hours? I had to think about it longer than I expected. To make it a little easier on myself, I thought about it through one lens: sound.

Morning:

No Alarm. The first sound I hear is birds chirping outside my window. Their twittering suggests I should get up, but doesn’t force it. There are no notification sounds, no buzzing, and no interruptions. Just a slow pull into the day. A ray of sunshine glares through my window, engulfing every corner of my bedroom with warmth.

Mid-Morning:

There’s music playing, the kind that's slow and easy. Maggie Rogers, maybe. Or Leon Bridges. I'm alone in the kitchen, in no rush, cooking avocado toast and hashbrowns while the espresso machine drips rich coffee that I will use to assemble a salted maple latte. The morning maintains a calm, simple rhythm.

Afternoon:

I'm sitting in a cafe without my headphones. I'm not attempting to block anything out. In fact, I crave the background noise. I order something, open my notebook or a book, and just exist alongside everyone else doing the same. The chattering of conversations I can't quite make out and the general hum of individuals rustling about help me focus in a way that silence cannot. Later, I'm outside playing pickleball. The commotion of balls making contact with rackets fills the air. My mind is clear except for a single goal: winning.

Evening:

Dinner or drinks with people I love. Everyone's talking, probably over each other at some point, and there's a lot of laughing. The overlapping voices, the sound of glasses meeting the table, the way a good story pulls the whole table in at once. That's really what I desire most: a table buzzing with laughter over tales of good times and future adventures to come.

Late Night:

White noise hums softly. I'm watching something effortless like a rom-com or Pride and Prejudice, something I don't have to pay too much attention to. It's a quiet end to a full, noisy day. I don’t always need the day to mean something. Sometimes the best days are ones where the sounds are just right.

What is your ideal day? This kind of question feels simple until you actually attempt to answer it. Then it feels like a map. One that teaches you small details about yourself, and what truly brings you happiness, which you would not have otherwise noticed. For me, the answer was surprisingly simple. My perfect day isn’t built around destinations or grand plans. It’s about the sounds of good food being made, of people I love laughing with, of noticing the world around me.
